Were the ancestors of modern Europeans the local hunter-gathererswho assimilated farming practices from neighboring cultures,or were they farmers who migrated from the Near East in theearly Neolithic? By analyzing ancient hunter-gatherer skeletalDNA from 2300 to 13,400 B.C.E. Bramanti et al. (p. 137, publishedonline 3 September) investigated the genetic relationship ofEuropean Ice Age hunter-gatherers, the first farmers of Europe,and modern Europeans. The results reject the hypothesis of directcontinuity between hunter-gatherers and early farmers and betweenhunter-gatherers and modern Europeans. Major parts of centraland northern Europe were colonized by incoming farmers 7500years ago, who were not descended from the resident hunter-gatherers.Thus, migration rather than cultural diffusion was the driverof farming communities in Europe.

Mimicking Caloric Restriction

The extended life span and resistance to age-related diseasesin animals exposed to caloric restriction has focused attentionon the biochemical mechanisms that produce these effects. Selmanet al. (p. 140; see the Perspective by Kaeberlein and Kapahi)explored the role of the mammalian ribosomal protein S6 kinase1 (S6K1), which regulates protein translation and cellular energymetabolism. Female knockout mice lacking expression of S6K1showed characteristics of animals exposed to caloric restriction,including improved health and increased longevity. The beneficialeffects included reduced fat mass in spite of increased foodintake. Thus, inhibition of signaling pathways activated byS6K1 might prove beneficial in protecting against age-relateddisease.The Calorie-Restriction Experiment

To exploit carbon nanotubes fully in electronic applications,one needs to be able to separate or synthesize either all semiconductingor all metallic tubes. However, unbiased synthesis conditionsproduce a mixture containing two-thirds semiconducting tubesand one-third metallic tubes. Harutyunyan et al. (p. 116) showthat altering the carrier gas and temperature, in combinationwith oxidative and reductive species during the synthesis processmodifies the catalyst particles during synthesis, which leadsto the selective growth of metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes.Thus, the shape and morphology of the catalyst seeds can betuned to grow carbon nanotubes of a specific chirality.
