Friedman, an author, country music singer and humorist who finished fourth with 12.4 percent of the vote in 2006 as an independent candidate for governor, earlier this month announced his plans to seek the Democratic nomination....
Friedman described his platform focusing on education, insurance reform and a justice reform policy inspired by the imprisonment of a wrongfully convicted Lubbock man who died in prison. Friedman said he would create the Timothy Cole Commission to establish guilt or innocence in honor of Cole, who was convicted of a rape he did not commit in 1986 and sentenced to 25 years in prison. Cole died of an asthma attack in 1999 while in prison, but was posthumously exonerated by a state judge earlier this year after DNA evidence cleared his name. As part of Friedman's Cole initiative, the candidate said he would ask for DNA tests of all Texas inmates on death row. By Adam D.
