Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens vindicated as feds drop case

Officers had a watchful eye on 3703 40th Street for the entire day, and around 4 p.m. officers seized the pot. Officers say this was not a "nickel and dime" operation but that the amount of pot seized would classify the operation as a "supply" operation. They seized a significant amount of money and upon entering the house found rolls of $20 bills. They also confiscated a money counter and a heat sealer.

Four adults were taken into custody and there were three children in the house. NewsChannel 11 was told Child Protective Services was called to the home and arrangements have been made for the children.

No names have not been released to NewsChannel 11 yet. Officers say the four adults will face 2nd degree felony charges possession of 2 to 500 pounds in a drug free zone.

A Lubbock motorcycle cop has been put on administrative leave after being arrested for DWI.
Officer Michael Furlow was arrested

shortly after 10:00 p.m. last Friday night. He bonded out of the Lubbock County Jail, but remains on paid, administrative leave from the department. Reports indicate Furlow was driving his own pick-up when he hit a guardrail in the 6500 Block of the westbound I-27 access road.Furlow is a 20-year Lubbock Police veteran, who joined the department in February 1989.

DPS License Supervisor Arrested In Document Scheme

A supervisor in Texas' drivers license division accused of conspiring to provide identification documents to illegal immigrants was arrested Friday, federal prosecutors said.

Texas Department of Public Safety Lt. Alvaro Ivan Adame, 40, of Wichita Falls, was indicted on a charge of conspiracy to transfer unlawfully issued identification documents, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

Adame, who has worked for DPS since 1988, has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigation. He was stationed in Wichita Falls and had worked at a Dallas drivers license office for several years, agency spokesman Tom Vinger said.

It was not immediately known if Adame had an attorney who could comment on his case. He was scheduled to appear before a federal magistrate Friday afternoon.

An indictment unsealed Friday alleges that Adame conspired with others to exchange illegally obtained New Mexico identification cards and drivers licenses for Texas ones.

JUDGE BLACKBURN ON TIM COLE'S CASE
"I've been doing this for more than 30 years and this is the saddest case that I've ever seen," Baird said, praising Cole's integrity for refusing to claim he did the crime so he could receive a lesser sentence. "I'm so sorry that the powers that be in Lubbock, Texas, do not have one ounce of that integrity."

Blackburn saved his harshest words for after the hearing, and for Judge Jim Bob Darnell, who prosecuted the case in 1986. Residents had been duped into believing in an infallible system they could not question, he said.

"I hope this case begins to open their eyes to just how corrupt and wrong and unlawful this whole system is," Blackburn said. "They should be ashamed of Judge Darnell, who should not be allowed to go to that courthouse. We deserve people with integrity on the bench instead of cowards."

Court papers filed in federal court in Washington by a State Department investigator show two Algerian women came forward separately to say they had been sexually assaulted by the man while at his home in Algiers, where he was stationed.

The court documents do not identify him as a CIA employee, but a congressional official familiar with the case said Wednesday he worked for the agency in Algiers until he was recalled in the wake of the investigation.

CIA nominee decries waterboarding

Ministers face torture pressure

UK ministers must answer allegations that Britain was complicit in torture, a senior Conservative MP has said.

David Davis said a High Court ruling on Wednesday alleged that Binyam Mohamed, a UK resident held in the Guantanamo Bay camp in Cuba, had been tortured.

The judges also said the US threatened to withdraw intelligence help from the UK if details were released.

US army suicides hit record high

The rate of suicides among soldiers in the US army has risen to a record level for the second year in a row. About a quarter of the deaths occurred in Iraq

The army said there were 128 confirmed suicides in 2008, with a further 15 deaths still under investigation.

About 35% of the suicides were of soldiers who had never been deployed, while 30% were soldiers who were on active service - three quarters of them on their first tour of duty.

Another 35% took place after deployment, mostly more than a year after the soldier had returned home.

Colombian Farc rebels have released a politician held hostage for more than seven years, the Red Cross has said.

Former provincial governor Alan Jara was hugged by his weeping wife and son as he stepped off a helicopter in the town of Villavicencio, east of Bogota.

Gun battles between suspected drug gang members and troops have left 21 dead in northern Mexico, police say.

The violence started when gunmen drove into Villa Ahumada, a farming town in Chihuahua state.

They dragged several people - including police officers - out of their homes and killed at least six.

Troops then arrived as the scene and 15 people, including one soldier, died in shootouts. Drug-related violence kills thousands every year in Mexico.

In a separate incident on Monday, armed men forced their way into a prison in the northern city of Torreon, and killed three inmates.

The dead men were being held for kidnapping and murder, and were transferred to the prison less than two hours before the incident.

The gunmen also released nine other inmates from the prison before they escaped.

Some 40,000 soldiers and police have been deployed since December 2006 against Mexico's drug cartels.

A strong oscillating laser field can pull electrons from the outer layer of an atom or molecule and then send them careening back, releasing high-energy photons upon collision. This process underlies recent techniques for generating the shortest light pulses, with durations below 10-15 second. Two studies now show that more tightly bound electrons can also undergo this ricochet process in strong fields (see the Perspective by Doumy and DiMauro). Li et al. (p. 1207; published online 30 October) observed distinct emission intensities at different stages in the vibrational period of a vibrating N2O4 molecule. Similarly, McFarland et al. (p. 1232, published online 30 October) found distinct spectral signatures depending on the spatial orientation of N2 molecules relative to the polarization of the applied laser field. In both cases, the results are attributed to involvement of electrons in both the highest and second-highest energy-occupied orbitals. The findings open the door to wide-ranging probes of electronic coupling to molecular vibrations and rotations on time scales previously too fast to monitor.
