they can to
defeat the
referendum
Hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans have held a protest against Sunday's referendum on President Hugo Chavez's controversial constitutional reforms.

The crowds gathered in Caracas oppose the planned changes, which include the removal of presidential term limits.

They accuse Mr Chavez of a power grab but supporters say the changes will deepen Venezuela's democracy.

It is the latest in a series of student-led rallies, ahead of the "yes" campaign's final march on Friday.

However, correspondents say the "no" campaign is gaining force.

1973 U.S. Cable on Mideast Mirrors Current Events Memo, Among Newly Released Nixon-Era Documents, Warns Saudi Monarch of Dangers From Fatah By Walter Pincus

Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, November 29, 2007; Page A03       A March 1973 State Department cable released yesterday by the National Archives recounts a promise by Saudi Arabia's King Faisal that terrorist threats to U.S. interests could be resolved as soon as Washington pressed Israel to withdraw from territory it had seized. The cable is one of 10,000 Nixon administration documents that were disclosed for the first time, including some related to terrorism and Middle East policymaking that illustrate how little has changed in more than 30 years.

On March 1, 1973, eight terrorists representing the Black September Organization, a Palestinian group with ties to Yasser Arafat and his Fatah political party, had seized the Saudi Embassy in Khartoum, Sudan's capital, during a reception for the departing U.S. deputy chief of mission. Diplomats, including the U.S. and Saudi ambassadors, were taken hostage, and demands were made for the release of Palestinian guerrillas held in various countries, including Israel. In the end, the two U.S. diplomats and a Belgian diplomat were killed, after which the terrorists surrendered to Sudanese officials. Two were immediately released, and after a trial, the six others were turned over to Arafat's organization.

Coast Guard Makes Record Drug Bust of 40,000 Pounds of Cocaine

ALAMEDA, Calif. —  The U.S. Coast Guard on Monday began unloading more than 40,000 pounds of cocaine seized from three ships off the Central American coast, including one bust called the largest in U.S. maritime history. The Coast Guard boarded a 330-foot ship heading north off the Pacific coast of Panama last month and discovered about 38,000 pounds of cocaine in two shipping containers, officials said. The bust was the largest single sea-based seizure of cocaine by a U.S. agency, Coast Guard Petty Officer Brian Leshak said.

In another bust off Panama's coast last month, a Coast Guard cutter chased down a cigarette-style speedboat carrying about 2,000 pounds of cocaine, officials said. The Coast Guard in February intercepted an Ecuadorian-flagged fishing vessel allegedly loading cocaine into speedboats off Mexico's coast. The fishing vessel's crew set fire to their ship to destroy the evidence and tried to flee in the speedboats, but were caught, according to the Coast Guard. About 900 pounds of cocaine were seized. The Coast Guard detained a total of 32 crew members in the three busts....see other related stories in my Blog ...Peace ... Gandalf

Landing humans on Mars would pose significant challenges
Nasa has released details of its strategy for sending a human crew to Mars within the next few decades.

The US space agency envisages despatching a "minimal" crew on a 30-month round trip to the Red Planet in a 400,000kg (880,000lb) spacecraft.

Details of the concept were outlined at a meeting in Houston, Texas.

Home video is providing new details on the alleged shooting involving Texas Tech Basketball Coach Bob Knight.  As we told you Tuesday night, two Lubbock residents say they were hit with shotgun pellets while Knight was dove hunting last month.  One of those residents, James Simpson, says Knight fired at him on purpose.  Simpson video taped his confrontation with Coach Knight.

The Lubbock Police Department closed their investigation earlier this month.  They told NewsChannel 11 they couldn't find any evidence that Coach Knight shot at Simpson.  On Wednesday, Simpson gave us a copy of his confrontation with Coach Knight back on October 21st.  Simpson says shotgun pellets landed on his house, around his yard, and in his pool.  He says he confronted Knight three times before bringing the camera out.

The Seventh court of appeals in Amarillo reversed the dismissal of a suit against Blake Littlejohn a former Lubbock Police officer. Littlejohn is accused of assaulting a 20 year old woman and forcing her to perform sexual acts on him in the back of his squad car. Littlejohn pled guilty to criminal charges and was then faced with a civil law suit which was dismissed.  The court held that Judge Sam Medina of the 237th district court should not have dismissed the suit and that he committed an error when he did so. Littlejohn plead guilty

Rebecca Hernandez v. The City of Lubbock and Blake Littlejohn--Appeal from 237th District Court of Lubbock County

This is in reference to a incident involving Littlejohn(LPD officer) and Hernandez that had Littlejohn being arrested for soliciting sex to tear up a traffic tickets and ignore outstanding warrants on Hernandez in summer of 2004. Littlejohn resigned and Sam Medina took it on himself to dismiss civil suit against city and Littlejohn filed by Hernandez. Medina is (R) and may have thought David Miller(R) needed off-the-hook on this "sleazy" conduct of LPD officer. Appeals court did not buy into the county judge lending a hand to both City of Lubbock and Littlejohn. Suit against Littlejohn has been reinstated BUT City of Lubbock has been given "free-pass" on civil liability thus getting City of Lubbock dismissed from this suit.

A Close Look at Stem Cells

Breakthrough shouldn't derail current research

Mercury News Editorial
Article Launched: 11/27/2007 01:38:58 AM PST

The wisdom of California's stem-cell research strategy shone through last week amid the news of an exciting potential breakthrough by scientists in Japan and Wisconsin.

Researchers announced significant progress in advancing the possibility that human skin cells could be reprogrammed to behave like embryonic stem cells. Any development that brings us closer to curing some of the world's most devastating diseases should be greeted with open arms - but a possibility years in the future is no substitute for the work going on today thanks to the foresight of California voters.

Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell Lines Derived from Human Somatic Cells

  Published Online November 20, 2007
Science DOI: 10.1126/science.1151526
Somatic cell nuclear transfer allows trans-acting factors present in the mammalian oocyte to reprogram somatic cell nuclei to an undifferentiated state. Here we show that four factors (OCT4, SOX2, NANOG, and LIN28) are sufficient to reprogram human somatic cells to pluripotent stem cells that exhibit the essential characteristics of embryonic stem cells. These human induced pluripotent stem cells have normal karyotypes, express telomerase activity, express cell surface markers and genes that characterize human ES cells, and maintain the developmental potential to differentiate into advanced derivatives of all three primary germ layers. Such human induced pluripotent cell lines should be useful in the production of new disease models and in drug development as well as application in transplantation medicine once technical limitations (for example, mutation through viral integration) are eliminated.

DEVELOPMENTAL BIOLOGY: A Loss of Flexibility With Age

Beverly A. Purnell

As a cell transitions from an undifferentiated state to a differentiated cell type, its gene expression profile changes, which in part reflects physical changes in chromatin structure. In a complementary approach, Pajerowski et al. have examined the macroscopic properties of the nucleus during differentiation. Aspiration with a micropipette revealed that the nuclei of pluripotent human embryonic stem cells could be deformed relatively easily; however, as the cells differentiated, the nuclei became stiffer. Hematopoietic stem cells (from bone marrow) were able to differentiate into fewer cell types than embryonic stem cells and, similarly, showed an intermediate level of deformability. Progression toward the differentiated state was accompanied by an increase in the filamentous protein lamin A/C and greater condensation of chromatin. When lamin A/C was knocked down in epithelial cells, their flow behavior resembled that of hematopoietic stem cells. Further analysis showed that the fluid character of the nucleus is determined primarily by chromatin but that the degree of nuclear deformability is set by the lamina. Variations in the physical plasticity of the nucleus may be important for allowing less differentiated cells to move through tissues. -- BAP

Observation of Berry's Phase in a Solid-State Qubit

Published Online November 22, 2007
Science DOI: 10.1126/science.1149858

In quantum information science, the phase of a wavefunction plays an important role in encoding information. While most experiments in this field rely on dynamic effects to manipulate this information, an alternative approach is to use geometric phase, which has been argued to have potential fault tolerance. We demonstrate the controlled accumulation of a geometric phase, Berry's phase, in a superconducting qubit, manipulating the qubit geometrically using microwave radiation, and observing the accumulated phase in an interference experiment. We find excellent agreement with Berry's predictions, and also observe a geometry dependent contribution to dephasing.
